Behind the torch

From Flame to Finish: Making a Glass Marble

October 17, 2026 · Video

Every marble starts as a rod of clear borosilicate glass and a torch running hot enough to melt it. What happens in between — the color, the shaping, the finishing — is all done by hand, one piece at a time. No molds, no shortcuts.

Here's a marble coming to life, condensed from nearly half an hour at the torch:

The stages

Gathering and heating. The glass goes into the flame until it's molten and glowing. This is the foundation everything else builds on — get the heat wrong here and the whole piece fights you.

Color work. Dots and trails of colored glass get applied to the surface, then melted in and manipulated. This is where each marble starts becoming one of a kind — no two applications land exactly the same way.

Shaping. Gravity, centrifugal force, and hand tools coax the molten glass into a sphere. It's a constant dialogue between the heat of the flame and the cooling air.

Finishing. The final smoothing pass, then into the kiln to cool slowly. Skip the annealing and the glass holds stress that can crack it days or weeks later.

The marble in these clips is one of many — every piece that leaves the studio went through exactly this process. When you hold one, you're holding about half an hour of focused work at the torch.

Like what you see?

Every piece is one of a kind.
